Congress has failed to adequately secure our borders and stop illegal immigration. Estimates vary on the number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. each year, ranging from over 500,000 to nearly a million. The total number of illegal immigrants residing in the U.S. is pegged between 12 and 14 million.
Hal Jordan understands that the strength of this country may be largely attributed to the millions of immigrants who came to our shores seeking hope and opportunity. He wants to encourage legal immigrants to come to the U.S., respect our laws, embrace our values, and become American citizens. However, we must not allow illegal immigration to supplant the rights of those who have lawfully applied for entry into our country. We must secure our borders and improve the legal immigration system to provide fair treatment to all. Amnesty for illegal immigrants would be a serious injustice to those who have followed our immigration laws.
Jordan supports legislation that would make English our national language, place a ban on driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, and enforce tougher penalties for employers who attempt to circumvent our laws prohibiting the hiring of illegal immigrants. He also supports the “Complete the Fence Act” which mandates completion of 700 miles of fencing along the Southwest border by the end of 2010. In addition to protecting against illegal immigrants, the fence will help slow the traffic of illegal drugs, most of which enter the United States across our southern border. Likewise, the fence should reduce the serious national security threat posed by both terrorists and criminals crossing open borders to harm America.
