Excessive government spending threatens the future of America as much as any crisis we are facing. Hal Jordan believes that people are rightly fearful that Congress is leading our nation toward financial disaster and that our children will pay dearly for the trillions of dollars of debt that Washington is leaving behind as its legacy. Federal spending has mushroomed in real terms, after adjusting for inflation, by more than 60% over the last 10 years. The last year alone has seen $1.42 trillion in deficit spending, far greater than any deficit except for those incurred during World War II when we were fighting to save the world from Nazi and Fascist tyranny. Congress has been unwilling to vote against massive bills containing thousands of earmarks laden with pet projects for the members’ districts.
The uncontrolled spending, if left unchecked, will completely mortgage our children’s future. The Congress has just raised the debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion, and a large and growing percentage of that debt is owed to China and other foreign powers. This translates into over $46,000 of debt for every U.S. citizen alive today. Until the Congress drastically reduces the unjustified and unprecedented amount of spending, the American people’s future will be placed in jeopardy and our children will be denied the opportunities that past generations have enjoyed. Hal Jordan will aggressively fight wasteful spending by working to eliminate earmarks, by aligning himself with others who wish to reduce soaring entitlement costs, and by placing a cap on federal spending. Jordan favors a federal balanced budget amendment, believing such an amendment may be the only way to force Congress to restrain itself.
